Team Descriptions

We're an interdisciplinary group of designers, developers, artists, learning scientists, and producers united by a shared mission: proving that learning should always be playful. Together, we've spent 20 years creating educational experiences that improve lives across every platform, subject, and age group.

Production and Project Management

At Filament Games, our approach to project management emphasizes communication and full transparency. At the contract level, we will document a specific set of Release Criteria; the mutually agreed-upon conditions needed for a Release to be Accepted. The formal Acceptance process for each Release will be detailed in each Statement of Work and will be facilitated using Jira, an industry-leading online project management and collaboration tool that allows us to document and track all Release Criteria and development tasks. Clients have access to Jira during implementation so that they have up-to-the-minute insight into our progress at all times. We’ll formally meet every two weeks for a Sprint review, during which we’ll discuss progress to date. Our teams are also available for adhoc meetings and communications on a daily basis. See below for details on the capabilities we use most in Jira as well as information about how we use the information generated by Jira to manage each project.

Visual & Interaction Designer Team

Each development team at Filament has a dedicated visual interaction designer who is responsible for designing the look and feel of each project. They also serve as the technical liaison between programmers and the illustration team. This role focuses on UI/UX design, visual aesthetics, and user interaction. Visual & Interaction Designers build the interface, art style, and UX flow of how the player sees and interacts with the screens. The visual interaction team is constantly iterating towards usability, clarity and quality in all player interactions. They specialize in creating experiences that eliminate unnecessary complexity, reduce the number of steps it takes to perform any given function, and reduce on-screen clutter so that the player has the tools and visual information they need to succeed.

Focus Area: How the game actually plays, rules/systems design, and aligning gameplay with educational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Creating intuitive, polished user interfaces (UI) and artistic visual assets.
  • Designing wireframes, navigation flows, and user experiences (UX) across extended reality (XR) or web platforms.
  • Ensuring visual aesthetics are clean, engaging, and aligned with brand or project goals.

Game Designer Team

This role focuses on gameplay mechanics, systems, learning design, and core interactive concepts. Game Designers build the rules, systems, and mechanics of how the game plays and teaches.

Focus Area: How the game or interactive software looks, feels, and navigates.

  • Designing game mechanics, systems, rules, and world-building.
  • Blending educational subject matter into playful, engaging core gameplay.
  • Deconstructing and mashing up game genres to match client needs and learning goals.

Game Art (Illustration and 3D Modeling) Team

The illustration team is used as a flexible resource across all projects. They are allocated to apply their breadth of styles and skill sets to each project in the studio as illustration demands rise and fall. Our game art team is broadly versed in all modes and styles of digital art, from retro pixel art to custom fully-rigged 3D models. With thoughtful considerations towards tone, mood, age range, and subject matter accuracy, our illustrators and 3D artists work diligently to ensure a pleasing aesthetic experience that suits your content, audience and budget.

Web Development Team

Filament’s web development team specializes in taking your project online. Composed of experts in graphic design, front end web design, and back end web development and infrastructure, this team works flexibly across browsers and platforms to create a web experience that is elegant, usable, and intuitive. We work primarily in Wordpress and Drupal, and are versed in front end frameworks including Angular, React, and Vue, as well as front end languages including Typescript, and Javascript. For back end web work, we specialize in FastAPI, Flask, Django, PHP, Node, and Javascript. Our web development team has a long track record of shipping web-based projects that support the educational and impact goals of our clients. Because we staff back end, front end, and graphic design specialists, our clients benefit from end-to-end web development services that can cover everything from nuts-and-bolts SQL database implementation to flashy, graphics-rich progressive web apps. Fluent in mobile and browser technologies, our web team can also work in tandem with our game developers to create and integrate the web-based components of your game project.

Sound Team

Our Sound team provides custom voice acting, narration, sound effects, and soundtrack compositions. This team also provides video production support for deliverables like in-game cinematics and promotional trailers. Filament provides comprehensive sound design and sound effect services. We produce songs in a vast variety of styles to fit the aesthetic of any game. Clients benefit from this capability by receiving wholly-owned custom content that does not require any third-party rights management.
